The post-modernist true believers, Alinskyites, Communists, and some "Green" watermelons really believe their own holy writ, that the first step is to "burn it all down". Maybe even depopulate the planet by a few billion people. For others it is sheer stupidity at work. They don't realize the destructive nature of free stuff, green energy, open borders, equity, etc. Many of the pandering politicians and the bureaucrats don't believe in anything but power, and damn the consequences. If they play their cards right, retirement and/or the revolving door of government/corporate/academia /pundit/author is always open. Funny how the flip side shows up in the U-Haul statistics- people who really do vote with their feet.
As far as definitions go, left or right, I believe this-

I find it amazing that many cannot comprehend that the far-left aristocrats are serious in their intention to reduce the population of the planet. As many didn’t before WWII.
That happens to be one of my favourite quotations - and it demarcates the two sides of the political spectrum. We need to be able to teach people which side favours freedom, and which side favours tyranny. Because those who favour tyranny will never want to admit the truth of the matter.
