"That's just firearms for now..."

No, not even close.

Here is just what immediately comes to mind-

The "for now" is already into our cars with CAFE and safety standards. It is in our homes with water flow restrictions, rain run-off regulations, and light bulb mandates. On the wish list (for now!) are gas stoves and ceiling fans. City, county and state governments are bribed, extorted, and/or exhorted with federal dollars to control everything under the sun, from speed limits to small engines- things like generators, garden equipment, and chain saws. I also must mention building codes and zoning laws. Of course the ultimate in state sponsored bend-me-over buggery are property taxes, which are nothing more than a permanent lien against any real property you supposedly "own". Under this system we have no right to any property, even the homes themselves, unless we pay government extortion. Then there is the abuse of eminent domain and civil forfeiture...

It's great to live in a free country...

Well, it’s the firearms that are the target of their severe authoritarian control - as of now. Those other items are just in the starting stages.

They’re picking the most ‘politically incorrect’ items as their first targets, attaining the tools and authority to ‘deal’ with them. Once they’ve set the precedent with guns, they’ll start on the other items you’ve listed.

National Propaganda Radio (NPR) had a segment a few weeks ago trying to pretend the slippery slope doesn’t exist - that’s how you know that is going to be their favourite avenue of attack.

I'd say it has been working the other way around. The State has thoroughly infiltrated everyday life. The government regulates virtually every aspect of out lives from birth to death. When I was a kid I didn't get an SSN until I was 16 and wanted to get a part time job. Now they are assigned at birth, and it is mandatory. Our food, water, clothing, homes, property, businesses, families, schools, banking, money, investment, retirement, inheritance, travel, transportation, and bodies are regulated. Hell, they still tell us when to change the clocks, and it is the only thing on the list that isn't taxed. What they have done is left the difficult things, the things we might actually be willing to fight about, for last. At this point, about all that's left is free speech and guns. Five years ago I might have put voting on that list with the 1A and 2A, but after 2020? Well, we'll see what happens in 14 months.
